Why did a new church like Coram Deo do a lemonade stand? Abby Morton, coordinator of Reno’s first Alex’s Lemonade Stand, summed it up when she said, “What an incredible inspiration—a young girl that made the best of what she had to offer. We can all learn from her story.” Abby serving up some great lemonade and a smile

Alex’s Story

In 2000, a 4-year old cancer patient named Alexandra Scott announced that she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help her doctors find a cure for kids with cancer. For the next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country to benefit Alex”s Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. On August 1st, 2004 Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 — she had raised over $1 million for childhood cancer research in her short lifetime. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $10 million for childhood cancer research.

We Love to Serve

According to Steve Meek, Coram Deo’s Families Pastor, “This is what Coram Deo is all about. We believe in the old saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” We can say we love people, we can say we want to help our community, we can say this is what Jesus would do–but talk is cheap, so we just get out there and do it.”

As one mother told her son while visiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand, “We help people with cancer because if we had cancer we would want someone to help us.”

“I had the best job of all said April Nellis, a Coram Deo-ite volunteering at Alex’s Lemonade Stand. “Serving lemonade to people who stopped by the stand (an estimated 200+ people). I love talking to people. We live in such an interesting city with some great people that truly wanted to help us raise money for childhood cancer research.”

We Raised $1,500

Reno’s first Alex’s Lemonade Stand raised more than $1,500 for childhood cancer research. “That is awesome! I can’t believe in our first year that we would raise this kind of money,”said Abby Morton with a big smile on her face. “All the long hours of getting this event off the ground were worth it when I think about any help we can give the cancer community.”
